Sodium-ion battery
Sodium-ion batteries are a type of rechargeable battery that uses sodium ions as charge carriers.〔Veronica Palomares et al., ''Na-ion batteries, recent advances and present challenges to become low cost energy storage systems''. In: ''Energy and Environmental Science'' 5, (2012), 5884-5901, .〕〔Huilin Pan et al, ''Room-temperature stationary sodium-ion batteries for large-scale electric energy storage''. In: ''Energy and Environmental Science'' 6, (2013), 2338-2360, .〕
== Advantages ==
The battery-grade salts of sodium are cheap and abundant, much more so than those of lithium.〔〔
Another advantage sodium-ion batteries have is they can be drained to zero charge without damaging the active materials. This means that they can be stored and shipped safely, even by airplane. In contrast, for a lithium-ion battery to remain viable, it must retain about 30% of its charge during storage. It’s enough charge that lithium-ion batteries could short-circuit and catch fire during shipment.〔(Challenging Lithium-Ion Batteries With New Chemistry ), Chemical & Engineering News, Alex Scott, 20 July 2015〕
